Roof Area vs Floor Area: Why Are They Different?

A pitched roof's surface is always larger than the building's footprint

Floor area is a flat measurement

Floor (or footprint) area is measured as if you were looking straight down at the building from above — length × width, ignoring any slope entirely. It's the figure used for things like room sizing, flooring, and general building footprint discussions.

Roof area accounts for the slope

A pitched roof's actual surface — the part exposed to weather and covered in shingles or panels — is stretched by the slope, so its true area is larger than the flat footprint below it. The relationship is roof area = footprint area × slope factor, where the slope factor comes from the roof's pitch.

The steeper the roof, the bigger the gap

On a flat or very low-slope roof, footprint and roof area are nearly identical. On a steep roof, the difference can be substantial — a 12/12 pitch (a 45° roof) has a slope factor of about 1.414, meaning the roof surface is over 41% larger than the footprint beneath it.
