Sand Types Used in Construction
Not all sand is interchangeable between applications
Concrete/mixing sand
Concrete sand is a manufactured or washed sand with a specific particle-size gradation suited to mix design, providing the fine aggregate portion of a concrete or mortar mix. Its gradation is more tightly controlled than many other sand products, since it directly affects the workability and strength of the finished concrete or mortar.
Paver bedding sand
Bedding sand is a coarser, angular sand used as the thin leveling layer directly beneath pavers, chosen for how well it locks pavers in place once compacted and swept with jointing sand. It generally isn't the same specification as concrete sand.
Fill sand
Fill sand is a lower-cost, less tightly-graded sand used for general backfilling and grading where strength and precise gradation aren't critical — it's not typically suitable for concrete mixing or as a paver bedding layer, since it lacks the specific properties those applications need.
Why the distinction matters
Using a fill-grade sand in a concrete mix, or a mixing sand as paver bedding, can produce a weaker mix or a less stable paver surface than the application calls for. Always confirm with your supplier which product classification you're buying, especially for a structural or load-bearing use.
