Formula, calculation, assumptions and sources
Area basis: units = area ÷ coverage per unit
Volume basis: units = volume ÷ yield per unit
Cost = units (rounded up, with waste) × price per unit
Run the calculation to see each step with your own numbers.
500 ft² to cover, a product that covers 50 ft² per bag, $18/bag, 10% waste.
Units = 500 ÷ 50 = 10 (exact)
With 10% waste → 11 bags
Cost = 11 × $18 = $198
- You supply the coverage/yield rate from the product's packaging — this calculator does the division, rounding and cost, nothing more.
- Area and coverage must be in the same kind of unit (both ft² or both m²); the calculator handles the unit you pick.
- Cost is only shown if you enter a price. BuildFactor never fills in a market price.
- When would I use this instead of a specific calculator?
- Use it for a material BuildFactor doesn't have a dedicated tool for — a specialty coating, a proprietary panel, a bagged product with an unusual coverage. If a dedicated calculator exists (concrete, tile, gravel, paint…), use that instead — it carries the right density and waste defaults.
- What coverage rate do I enter?
- Whatever the product's packaging states — square feet per bag, cubic feet per bag, square feet per roll. The calculator divides your quantity by that rate, rounds up and applies the waste allowance.
- Why is the cost showing zero?
- Because no unit price has been entered. BuildFactor never fills in a market price — type in the price you were quoted and it multiplies through.
Method
Arithmetic only: quantity ÷ rate, rounded up, optionally × price. No material constant is assumed — you provide the rate.
About the Construction Material Calculator
The Construction Material Calculator is a general-purpose divider: give it an area and a coverage-per-unit rate, or a volume and a yield-per-unit rate, and it returns the number of units — bags, boxes, rolls, sheets — plus an optional cost. It holds no material data of its own; you supply the rate from the product packaging. If BuildFactor has a dedicated calculator for your material, use that instead, because it carries the right density and waste defaults.
What you enter
- Estimate by
- Area to cover
- Coverage per unit (area basis) — e.g. ft² per bag / box / roll / sheet.
- Volume to fill
- Yield per unit (volume basis) — e.g. ft³ per bag. 0.6 ft³ for an 80-lb concrete bag.
- Price per unit (optional) — Your quoted price — BuildFactor never fills in a market price.
- Waste allowance — Default 10%. Adjust to your own allowance — the exact figure is always shown too.
What you get back
- Units needed — shown as the exact figure and, separately, a recommended figure with your waste allowance added.
- Estimated cost — 0 unless you enter a unit price. Exact = whole units for the exact quantity; recommended = whole units including waste.
The formula, a worked example, the assumptions behind it and the sources are shown in full below the calculator.
