Formula, calculation, assumptions and sources
Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Weight = Volume × bulk density
Run the calculation to see each step with your own numbers.
A 24 ft × 12 ft driveway, 4 in of ¾-in stone, 10% waste.
Volume = 96 ft³ = 3.56 yd³ exact
Weight ≈ 3.56 × 1.35 ≈ 4.8 US tons
+10%: order 3.92 yd³ / 5.3 tons
- A rectangular area at one uniform depth; split an irregular driveway or drainage run into rectangles.
- Bulk density is a typical loose figure for ¾-in crushed stone — confirm the tons-per-yard with your quarry for the exact product.
- Depth entered is loose; compacted stone settles ~10–15%.
- What's the difference between crushed stone and gravel?
- Gravel is naturally rounded; crushed stone is mechanically broken with sharp faces that lock together, so it compacts better for a base or driveway. Density is similar — both around 1.3–1.5 tons/yd³.
- How many tons of crushed stone in a cubic yard?
- Around 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard for typical 3/4-inch crushed stone, but it varies with the rock type and how wet it is. Ask your quarry for their tons-per-yard and enter it as the density.
Volume
Standard geometry: Volume = L × W × D. Unit conversions per NIST SP 811.
Bulk density
Typical crushed stone (¾-in) ≈ 1.35–1.45 t/yd³ loose (≈1,600 kg/m³). Engineering ToolBox / aggregate producer data.
About the Crushed Stone Calculator
The Crushed Stone Calculator gives the volume and estimated weight of mechanically crushed rock — the angular, sharp-faced stone used for driveways, drainage layers and compacted bases. It uses a cited default bulk density that you can replace with your quarry's tons-per-yard for the exact product. For naturally rounded gravel use the Gravel Calculator; for a compacted sub-base under a driveway or slab, the Road Base Calculator.
What you enter
- Length
- Width
- Depth — 2 in for a drainage or top layer; 4 in for a driveable surface course.
- Waste allowance — Default 10%. Adjust to your own allowance — the exact figure is always shown too.
What you get back
- Volume — shown as the exact figure and, separately, a recommended figure with your waste allowance added.
- Delivered weight — Suppliers usually sell by weight. Weight uses the material's bulk density (adjustable).
The formula, a worked example, the assumptions behind it and the sources are shown in full below the calculator.
