Formula, calculation, assumptions and sources
Pavers = Paved area ÷ (paver length × paver width), plus a waste allowance
Run the calculation to see each step with your own numbers.
A 20 ft × 15 ft patio with 8 × 4 in pavers, 5% waste.
Area = 300 ft²; one paver = 0.222 ft²
Pavers = 300 ÷ 0.222 = 1,350 → order 1,418 with 5%
- Rectangular area. For a curved or irregular patio, use the largest rectangle plus separate pieces.
- Joint sand between pavers is not deducted — it's a small fraction and the waste allowance covers it.
- The compacted base and bedding sand are separate (Road Base and Paver Sand calculators).
- Do pavers come by the piece or the pallet?
- Usually by the pallet, priced per ft². A pallet of 8×4 pavers covers roughly 100–120 ft². The calculator gives you the piece count and the area so you can convert to pallets.
- Should I add for the joints between pavers?
- No — the sand-filled joint is a small fraction of the area and the waste allowance covers it. Adding it separately would over-order.
- What goes under the pavers?
- A compacted crushed-stone base (Road Base Calculator) topped with about an inch of screeded bedding sand (Paver Sand Calculator). This calculator covers only the pavers themselves.

About the Paver Calculator
The Paver Calculator gives the number of pavers for a patio, walkway or driveway from the area and the individual paver size, plus a waste allowance for edge cuts. A straight-edged rectangle in running bond wastes little; a herringbone pattern, a curved edge or a circle kit wastes more. The compacted base and the bedding sand under the pavers are separate — see the Road Base and Paver Sand calculators.
What you enter
- Area length
- Area width
- Paver length
- Paver width
- Waste allowance — 5% for a running-bond rectangle; 10%+ for a herringbone, a curved edge or a circle kit.
What you get back
- Paved area — the exact result of the calculation.
- Pavers needed — shown as the exact figure and, separately, a recommended figure with your waste allowance added.
The formula, a worked example, the assumptions behind it and the sources are shown in full below the calculator.
